XP file sharing problem

Nate

I'm having a strange problem accessing my XP Pro computer on the
network. There's 2 computers with XP Pro on them. I'm using a wireless
router and connect the 2 together with an Ethernet cable. Both can
access the Internet just fine, however, on the one that I've added to
it, can't access any of the files on there from the other one. They both
are using the same workgroup name and it has a drive shared on there,
but when trying to access it, it says it is not accessible. "You might
not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Unable to impersonate using a named pipe until data has been read from
that pipe."
Both of the computers have all the same user accounts, all of which are
set up as admin. I've tried connecting using different usernames with
their respective password, but nothing has worked. Simple file sharing
is enabled on both and all software firewalls (including the built-in
one) are turned off.
BTW, when I go to View Workgroup Computers, it'll be listed there, but
if I try to right-click and select Properties on it, it'll say the
server computername does not accept remote requests.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks!

Nate,

What software firewalls are turned off? Some firewalls are known for
misbehaving, do not respond properly to being turned off, and cause problems
with file sharing.

Here's an interesting article from M$:
<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318030&Product=winxp>

Check the status of RPC service on both computers. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services.

I have both the Internet Connection Firewall OFF and the Zone Alarm
turned off as well. Zone Alarm starts when I boot the computer so I
always shut that down manually and can see that it's not running when I
look in the Task Manager.

Nate,

If there was a list of firewalls that cause problems, even when Disabled, Zone
Alarm would be at the top of the list. If you don't believe me, do a Google
search in microsoft.public.* for "Zone Alarm" and see what you get.

If you don't get any more suggestions, you will need to prepare to un install ZA
completely, using all un install procedures provided.

Hi Nate,

Thanks for your posting and thanks for Chuck's help. Nate, does this issue
still occur after you uninstall ZoneAlarm?

If the issue persists, please try the following steps and then test the
problem.

1. On the problematic computer to which the other computer cannot access,
click Start >> Run >> Type "eventvwr" in Open box >> Click OK.

2. Select Security >> Click Action >> Properties.

3. In Log size, please choose "Overwrite events as needed" and click ok.

4. Please check to see if the problem is resolved.

If anything is unclear please let me know.

Sincerely,

William Wang

Yes, I still had the problem after uninstalling ZoneAlarm. My Event
Viewer is actually set to overwrite events older than 7 days.

I just happened to find a message from Chuck to someone else who
sounded like they were having about the same problem as me. He was
saying that if Simple File Sharing is disabled, then the "Network
access: Sharing and security model" under the Security Options in Local
Policies should be set to "Classic - local users authenticate as
themselves". So, I made sure that it was disabled and made that change
in the Local Policies. Then, sure enough, I was able to connect to that
computer and see the files and everything! It's amazing! I assume that
maybe it had to do something with my Guest account on there when I had
Simple File Sharing enabled. Would I have needed to turn it on and make
it password protected if it was enabled?

Also, I'm still not able to connect to that computer with my Win ME
laptop. Do I need to create a user on there with the same name as 1 of
the accounts on that computer? Thanks!!

Nate,

If your WinXP computer is using the NTFS (not FAT) file system, then you can set
permissions for any shared folder (and subfolders) in an NTFS partition. If the
permissions are for Everyone, then you can access that share when logged in to
any account, from another computer. If you designate permissions for Guest, or
for any other named account, then you can access that share only when logged in
to that specific account (with matching password), from another computer.

So check your share permissions. If the share is for Everyone, any account on
the other computer should be able to access the share. For a wireless network,
though, I would recommend permissioning any private data to specific accounts
(not using Administrator, Everyone, or Guest).

Hi Nate,

This is in regards to your following question:
Guest account on there when I had Simple File Sharing
enabled. Would I have needed to turn it on and make
it password protected if it was enabled?

When Simple File Sharing is enabled, all remote users
are authenticated as Guest, so you need to enable the
Guest account.
computer with my Win ME laptop. Do I need to create
a user on there with the same name as 1 of the
accounts on that computer?

Yes, create two identical users with non-blank
password on each computer.
