I've used the Fax Service very little (not much need for faxing these
days). When you run the Fax Console ("%SystemRoot%\System32\FxsClnt.exe
/new") and look under Tools -> Fax Printer Configuration, is there any
fax'able device listed there? Or don't you get that far (i.e., no fax
printer so nothing possible to configure)? If not, what do you see for
a fax'able device under Tools -> Configure Fax -> (enter some user
data) -> Next which then has you select a fax device? I recall that at
one point it had some wizard execute that tested the device; I think
that was when selecting a new device (i.e., not before diagnosed) to
check that it was indeed a fax'able device. A serial port to some
external fax machine is not itself a fax'able device unless there is a
driver that will use the serial port that will manage the external fax
machine. What fax machine did you get? Doesn't it come with a driver
to support its operation over a serial, USB, or whatever port it uses?

I'm not impressed with XP's fax anyway, found it a bit clumsy.
No, Quicklink Message Centre won't run on XP, so I use the one which
superseded it - MightyFax v3.08.

If the fax machine that you have purchased is not a stand-alone machine and
there is software which you have installed to make it work , this might be
causing a two device-like conflict with the XP Fax. I have found the XP Fax
to work well for occasional faxing and receiving. Jym
