XP FAX software, continued

I did a System Restore using the OEM's Restore CD, and
now I have a new almost virgin XP Home hard drive. And I did the
Add/Remove Programs and Windows Programs, and installed the FAX.

But I can find neither the program not the instructions for its use.
Please lead me to them, and thank you.

Thank you, David. I'll look there.

Thank you, David. You see, part of the problem is that, with the
way the OEM system works, I never have a CD which has files
which can be reloaded. The OEM supplies two CDs: One has "Drivers",
the other has a Ghost file which can only recreate the originally
supplied system, and that by wiping everything off the hard drive.
Now that I have a 'restored' hard drive, is there any way that I
can copy the entire FAX part over to my 'working' XP hard drive?
Or maybe there is a download of it, that you could lead me to?

Have you tried Add/Remove programs. The install files may be on your hard disk.

Yes, David. They are there, with .dl_ extension. But they don't expand
or convert to .dll files, and if I point to i386 on my other hard drive
where they are in .dll form, the FAX installation software just doesn't
accept them. Typing the location and filename into the window and
hitting Enter, nothing happens. Rob Scheider says my XP is corrupt or
'unusual', and he's right, but I have no way to fix it. I was hoping
somebody would give me a link to a download of the FAX software.

Bill,

I'm still puzzled. The first item in this thread says "And I did the
Add/Remove Programs and Windows Programs, and installed the FAX." But
you're still trying to expand .dl_ files from another, independent
installation of XP, into the new, restored, XP setup.

Have you ever tried simply running the fax console program? Following is
the standard short cut (from the communications menu):

%SystemRoot%\System32\FxsClnt.exe /new

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

When I said "...and installed the FAX" I meant as far as it would
install using that procedure, up to where it forced me to abandon the
installation because it could not find the files or accept them when
I led them to the files. On this drive I could never get to the
FAX console. However, if you would be so kind as to give me an
exact link to the 'standard shortcut', starting perhaps with
c:\windows\system32 or something similar, I'd be happy to try it.

Rob, I decoded the link you suggested, and it did indeed take
me to the FAX console. But the installation is obviously
incomplete since all of the dropdowns are greyed out and I can't
run it. The .dll files which I couldn't get it to install as I
reported are just not there, is the way I diagnose it.

Bill,

I'm sorry. I have no experience debugging this. For me, the FAX
software was "just there" and worked. E-machines haven't done you well.
(Gateway just bought them, you know).

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
