XP Fails to load

I have a Maxtor Hard Drive that fails to load XP on two
systems. The failure occurs during the initial load of XP
when it is copying the files from the CD to the hard
drive. When it gets to about 4% the sytem hangs. Some
times it reports an error trying to write the file.
Maxtor provide a diagnostic program to verify the Hard
Drive but no errors are reported. I heard somewhere that
during an XP installation there was something about
turning off/on DMA to resolve a problem like this.
Anybody out ther heard of this problem, and more to the
point the fix!!

you can go into the system bios and disable udma, but I doubt
whether the instal uses udma, probably the slower PIO.
It's something you can try though.

Did you use maxblast or any software on this drive prior to installing
XP?

Hi Dave,

Yes I did run maxblast and the disk tests ok...the
failure i experience is identical on two systems, an old
Pentium 150 and my AMD Athlon 1900+. Always when XP is
attempting to load files it fails at 4% but on different
files, it looks like it could be data pattern problem..I
have tested the XP CD and that ok. I replaced the disk
with an old 2Gb Seagate and away she goes!!!

If that drive is failing to load XP on multiple systems and you've verified
that the Install CD is OK, then I would request a replacement hard drive.
Even though it's passing the tests, there seems to be some problem with it.
What model is it? Is it a SATA drive?
