XP Encryption - quick questions

Hello All,

(#1)It appears that in WinXP, access to encrypted files is based ENTIRELY by
USER? If that is the case, if you map to an encrypted folder on another
machine... but, AS the user who has access to the encrypted folder, why can't
the file be accessed?

(#2)What is the best way to BACKUP a security key... for an entirely
encrypted folder... just in case something happens and you must be able to
access that folder from a different computer?

thanks.

You are right; EFS encrypts in the user's context and the certificate and key
are stored in the user's profile on the machine where the encryption
occurred. Accessing encrypted files remotely requires some configuration.
You can access encrypted files remotely over WebDAV or over SMB if the server
is trusted for delegation. More information about that is here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/deploy/cryptfs.mspx

The best way to back up the certificate and key is through the Certificates
snap-in. This page has that information under "Exporting Certificates and
Keys":
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/c18621675.mspx

Thanks.
