I use a USB smartmedia card reader from Sandisk with my XP Pro SP1.

Everytime I just plug it into a USB port, XP recognizes it, and I can
read my media from the card. I was able to do this up till today. I
plug the reader in and it is not recognized. The new hardware wizard
comes up instead and ends with not recognizing the reader.

I checked the manufacturer's web page and it says that they do not
supply drivers for the XP OS.

Any help getting this fixed?

Thanks in advance for any replies!!

Windows XP natively supports SanDisks. It will enumerate
it in the normal Disk Drives category of Device Manager.
You shouldn't need to use a 3rd party driver to support it.
Open Device Manager, Click View - tic Show Hidden Devs"
Expand the Disk Drives Category. (Be sure the SanDisk is
unplugged, while doing this). Right Click each instance of
the SanDisk and choose Uninstall. Close DevMgr and then
re-plug your device. (Also, always try to use the same USB
channel (Port) for devices or you can end up with multiple
instances or Phantoms of the peripheral.

Thanks for the reply. In device manager, with show hidden devices
checked, sandisk does not show under disk drives or anywhere else. I
had it unplugged when I looked and now when I plug it in I don't even
get the new hardware wizard. I tried it in all 4 usb ports I have and
nothing but the reader's gree light lights.

Anything else I can try?

It should also have an entry in the USB devices category,
as Mass Storage Device. You might look there for any
Phantoms (Grayed Out). Look also for "Other Devices"
this is where Windows puts detected - but no driver type
of devices. Very unusual that no type of enumeration now
happens. The device must be listed somewhere in DM.

I plugged it in again and the hardware wizard did not come up this but
I went into device manager anyway.

It had other devices there now with a yellow question mark next to it
and under that heading was imagemate usb smartmedia with a yellow
questiion mark next to it also.

When I double click it under general, it says no drivers installed for
this device and under driver i get no info under every option.
Clicking driver details it says no driver files are required or have
been loaded for this device.

I uninstall the other device and it just comes back that way again.

XP has built in native drivers for the Sandisk family of smartmedia
and smartcard readers. They should show up as a removable hard drive
or mass storage device when plugged in. (and a card inserted)

If your reader is no longer being recognized, (make sure you have a
card inserted) try plugging into a different USB port on the same
machine. Also try another card with the reader. If no joy, try it on
another machine. If still no joy, purchase another reader. That one
is probably defective.
