XP does not recognize all com ports

I'm attempting to install a GPS (Global Positioning System) device to com port 6, which is a USB port. This is being done via a serial port cable connected to a USB port cable. XP does not recognize that the device is connected, and, in fact, the only ports listed in a drop-down menu are 1 through 4. What must be done to allow XP to recognize that an additional port is actually available and in use?

Windows XP is recognizing the port COM 6. It is listed in Device Manager,
so XP sees it. However, your GPS software does not support the com ports
greater than 4. Com ports 1 to 4 use the standard IRQs/DMAs/IORange. Com
ports 5 and higher do not use the standard settings.

Yves, does that mean that I cannot make any changes to have it all work together?

Nick, I don't do that, as all serial ports are used, and the serial cable that was sent with the GPS does not fit into my laptop's serial port-both are male. Thanks.

You can get adapters to "convert" the serial cable to be able to fit the
laptop's serial port.

You will need to see if the GPS software can use other com ports. Or, you
can check to see if you can "force" the com 6 (USB) to a com port 1 - 4.

BTW: What do you currently have on com 1 thru 4??

Whoa! Serial ports are female on the computer, male on the cable. Are
you sure you have a serial port and you are not looking at the VGA port?

Serial ports are mail, so that just leaves the cable that plugs into the GPS
and I assume that they made it...and it fits their Unit...?
