Hi

I have Win XP home on my laptop. I tried to play a DVD on it and it
hung. None of the buttons worked so I pressed the power button to stop
the system and then restarted it. Now, I am getting the message:
"Windows NT has not found enough extended memory. 7mb of extended
memory is required to run Windows NT. You may need to upgrade your
computer or run a configuration program provided by the manufacturer."
Then it just stops!

It does not give me a chance to go into safe mode. Can someone help
me? How can I get the system to work without having to reformat the
hdd?

Thanks

Press f8 a bunch of times on boot to get the extended boot menu
including safe mode.

The extended memory error is odd. Might be worth popping the little
memory slot cover and reseating your memory modules. Perhaps some
jarring of the machine cause one to unseat.

Good luck. Not a lot of clues to go on unfortunately, and it could
be a bunch of stuff.

Actually, I think Todd is on to something with the memory. Forget about
going into Safe Mode. Since you have a laptop, I doubt that the RAM got
dislodged, but you should run a test on it anyway. Go to
http://www.memtest86.com. Obviously, you'll need to do this from a
working computer. If your laptop has a floppy drive, download the
precompiled Windows binary and make a bootable floppy with it. If your
laptop only has a cd drive, download the .iso for the bootable cd. In
either case, make your bootable media, take it to the laptop and boot
with it. You might need to set your laptop to boot from either the cd
drive or the floppy drive. You do this by entering the BIOS set up;
look for the Boot Order entry.

Now boot with Memtest86 and allow the test to run for an extended time,
unless you see errors immediately. If you see errors, you will need to
replace that RAM.

Thanks Todd and Malke. More information about my problem: My laptop
boots from CD by default. So, I put in my OEM restore CD to see if I
can boot into the restore menu of the CD. But, here is the problem: It
does not even get into the BIOS menu!!! When I start the computer
with the restore CD in the drive, it does not even try to go to the
CD, it comes straight to this error message! I tried the f8 thing
also, it comes straight to this error message! What does this mean?
Looks like a hardware problem to me. I am not interested in taking it
to the repair shops since they are suggesting that reformatting the
harddrive will solve the problem, I do not think so....

The "F8 thing" is useless in this case. Your machine is not even loading
the operating system and F8 gets you into the menu for Safe Mode, etc.
I do believe you have hardware failures, and I would start by testing
the RAM as I suggested. If you don't have access to another machine or
aren't able to do this, you don't really have any choice but to call
the laptop mftr.'s tech support or take the machine to a local
professional who is smart enough to know that formatting the hard drive
to install software will be absolutely useless if the hardware is bad.

You cannot fix this by installing software. You have to find which
component has failed and replace it.

Good luck,

Malke
