xp disk defragmenter quits at 3%

my xp home sp1 disk defragmenter moves a few files around, then quits at 3%. It says total disk fragmentation is like 20%
my hd is 75% full. any ideas?

Yes, I've scan-disked it, emptied recycle bin, etc
Nothing seems to work, and this problem has occurred three times in the last week.

Have a look in Event Viewer to see if there are any clues. Make a note of the precise text of any error message.

Start, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID: and Source Description are important.

Have you tried running Disk Cleanup first?

You need to start msconfig and do a modified startup. Turn
off the Startup group items and any services dealing with
AV and /or FW (agents). Click on apply and ok then restart.
At prompt about using diagnostic mode click ok. on msconfig
(2nd time) click cancel. Start disk cleanup and perform
this. Then use defrag. Defrag should work without any
startup items running.
