XP desktop won't load - please help!!

My in-laws computer won't load their desktop(s) and just logs them off each time the select a user. After selecting a user, it gives the usual message "Loading personal settings" (or whatever) and the 'Bliss' desktop appears (which is not the selected desktop for either user). No icons ever appear and a few seconds later it then logs the user off and goes back to the "Welcome" screen.
Anyone else ever experience this? I'm no guru but can sometimes fix more simple problems but this seems over my head - I don't even know where to start if I can't even log on! Please point me in the right direction, some one? ! ? !
