XP desktop reboots continuously

Good Afternoon,

My windows xp desktop keeps rebooting/crashing on me intermittently
throughout the day. I have tried updating windows, ran spyware scan, av is
up to date, etc but it still keeps crashing. Upon reboot, I receive a
notification that the system has recovered from a serious error and if I
would like to send the details to MS. I noticed in the system log that I
keep getting the same log on reboot. I have turned off the option to restart
the system in the control panel/system/startup and recovery options hoping
that if it happens again in the future I will understand what is causing
this.

A copy of the logged event from the system log is posted below. Does anyone
know where I can find information regarding this event? I have searched the
knowledge base but nothing comes up.

This is most likely caused by a bad device driver.

My windows xp desktop keeps rebooting/crashing on me intermittently
throughout the day.

This is more difficult to troubleshoot in Windows XP than it need be,
thanks to some really stupid default settings that automatically
restart the system whenever there's a system-wide error.

So I have to ask: What exactly happens when this happens?

If the system just resets (reboots) with no error messages at all,
then it's most likely to be hardware, specifically:
- bad mains power
- bad power supply
- bad motherboard capacitors
- other bad hardware; motherboard, processor fan, graphics

If you get a system error that tells you the system will restart, and
then it does, then that's more likely software hassles, malware
activity, or direct network attacks.

If this does not happen unless you are online (connected to the
Internet) then it is probably direct network attacks, and less likely
active malware on the system.

What version of Windows XP?
- original unpatched XP is unfit for use online
- must patch and/or enable/add firewall
- else constant RPC and LSASS attacks
- unpatched XP SP1 is unfit for use online
- must patch and/or enable/add firewall
- else constant RPC and LSASS attacks
- unpatched XP SP2 is OK online
- firewall is on by default
- RPC and LSASS defects are patched
- other exploitable defects need patching however
I have tried updating windows, ran spyware scan, av is
up to date, etc but it still keeps crashing. Upon reboot, I receive a
notification that the system has recovered from a serious error and if I
would like to send the details to MS. I noticed in the system log that I

the system in the control panel/system/startup and recovery options

Good move! That's one of two stoooopid duhfault settings that I was
referring to; the other is "restart the computer on RPC failures".

Event logger is like a forest's worth of trees, all mashed into
matchbox-sized wood chips. It's very hard work trying to make sense
of it all, especially details of what AutoChk / ChkDsk have been up
to; lots of detail and "noise", often not rationally arranged.

Yeah - quite.

What's your hardware specification? Overclocking? Overheating? Did
this problem start suddenly or gradually get worse? Have you done RAM
diagnostics, e.g. MemTest86? Have you checked the physical hard
drive, e.g. HD Tune? Does the problem go away if you disconnect all
peripherals? Does it come right if you get off all networks?
