XP dead, tried to convert from FAT to NTFS

I attempted to convert my file type from FAT to NFTS on my XP machine
(upgraded from W98). Spent 3 hours on the phone with MS. Now have error 'load
needed DLL's for Kernal'.
Apparently, I need to start over with a XP full edition and a clean HD.

However, when I am in the 'repair mode' of XP I can see my data file
directories but the system will not allow me to copy them to a: for some
reason (access=denied).

This article describes how to take ownership of a file or folder
to which you have been denied access:

Problem is Carey that I cannot boot up at all...even in safe mode......I have
to use the Windows XP CD (Upgrade) to access the 'repair' area.....From there
I can see my files & directories in MS DOS mode but cannot copy them to a
'removeable disk' ie A:.......Still need Help

Your best bet is to take that hard drive out and install it in another
computer as a secondary. That way you don't need to worry about it being
bootable, and you aren't limited to saving floppy-sized files.

If you don't have another computer and can't talk a friend into this, a
local shop should be able to do it for you pretty easily.

D. Currie.....Thanks for your thoughts.....My goal now is to purchase a brand
new harddrive and the full edition of Windows XP and make this the Master
drive.....Then I can use the old drive as the slave......Hopefully will be
able to pull the files from the old drive onto the new one this way......This
should work right?.......Thanks much

Sounds like a reasonable plan.

Good luck.

If you have an XP Upgrade disk with legitimate key code, and, have a win9X
disk available as proof for upgrade ( it will ask for this on a clean
install), then you do not need to purchase a full edition cd. Both are
identical, only difference is with the upgrade it asks you for verification
by inserting the previous win9x disk during the clean install.
Good luck,

You did not need to in order to convert a FAT partition to NTFS - see
www.aumha.org/win5/a/ntfscvt.htm

But things may have been so damaged - and without knowing just what you
did it is difficult to be sure - that the only sensible course is to
start over, erasing the disk and reinstalling from scratch

If you have a 'proper' XP CD (full or Upgrade, but probably not a makers
Restore one) you can try a 'repair' reinstall - Set the BIOS to boot CD
before Hard disk, then boot the XP CD, start Setup (do not take
'Repair' at this stage), then after the license agreement take 'Repair
Installation'. This will retain your existing software installations
and most settings. But Updates will have to be run again, especially
Service Pack 2

This might get you to the point where you could recover data files, but
I am not optimistic. If the partition is half way between one and
another file system there is unlikely to be a possibility of recovery

If not then you have to take New Install rather than Repair, When it
asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the current
partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next stage

Or if all you have is a maker's Restore system use that to go back to
ex-factory state.

You could try booting from a Knoppix CD, and see if it will give
you access to your data files. This might allow you to copy off
your critical data. Knoppix is free and doesn't mess with your
hard drive, so you lose nothing by giving it a try.
