Converting from NTFS to FAT

Is there any way to convert my hard drive from
NTFS to FAT without losing the data on it?

Thanks!

Not to FAT, but FAT32 is possible with Partition Magic and some
other Disk Management tools. But any "Conversion" is inherently a
dangerous process. I wouldn't attempt it, unless you have imaged
the drive or backed up irreplaceable data.

Partition Magic 8 can convert a NTFS drive to FAT32

However, you should always backup your files....just in case.

No, you can convert a partition from FAT to NTFS, but you cannot go from NTFS
to FAT. You will have to reformat the partition. Try to save as much of the
data as you can. But you will lose it when you format the partition. I hope
this helped.

One more thing - Before you do the conversion, take a minute to run
a Chkdsk on the drive first. Partition Magic will detect drive errors or
inconsistencies, but doesn't provide any corrective capability.

Not with native Windows tools. It requires a third-party program
such as Partition Magic.

Bear in mind, though, that there's always risk in doing something
like this, and it isn't wise to try without making sure you first
have a backup of anything you can't afford to lose.

Why do you want to do this, by the way? Unless yours is a
special situation, it's normally a mistake.

Something I've always been curious about. Can PM-8 deal with (convert,
resize etc) *all versions* of NTFS including the versions (5? 5+) used
by Win2K and XP (I had the feeling it preceded XP)?

As a supplementary question, it's my understanding that the NTFS system
used by XP is slightly modified from that used by Win2K. Is it therefore
OK to run multiple boot partitions (Win2K and XP) accessing the same
NTFS data drives?

Version 8.01 can, but you'll frequently run into issues with "Sparse"
data when attempting to convert or resize partitions. Also compressed
folders/files cause some issues with PQMagic.

Don't speak in absolutes when you don't "know" the facts. You can't
do this using native XP tools, but you CAN do it using Partition
Magic. Millions have done it with no problem, but it always
recommended you back up your data prior to ANY FS conversion just in
case. Data loss is always a possibility.

I am building an embedded system using a real time OS that does not
support NTFS.

I have purchased Partition Magic and I will try it tomorrow. And yes,
I will back up first ;-)

Only tool I know of is Partition Magic 8. And for that it is necessary
to decompress any compressed files/folders (showing as Blue) and decrypt
any encrypted files.

If anyone is interested, Partition Magic was able to convert my NTFS
to FAT32 without a problem.

Larry, was that (as I assume) the XP version of NTFS? And what was the
actual release of Partition Magic (8.0, 8.1 ....?)
