I tried two differnt connections: wireless USB connection and going through
another computer via lan cable. Results are the same - windows crashes and
restarts with a disc check just a few seconds after a start. If it is
started without any connections it works fine, and it is still fine if the
cables are connected a minute after the windows starts. Any solutions?
Thanks.

A bit more info and might be able to help you like is it broadband? wha
spec is your pc? what version of windows is it? have you tried going
through an ethernet cable?

It's a Sony laptop w/ P-III 800MHz 384Mb RAM. The internet is broadband
cable coneected through a wireless router. I tried going through USB wireless
antenna and through another computer through ethernet cable. The results are
the same.
Both connections worked fine before. I think the problem started after I ran
a defrag on the disc. I also downloaded and ran a free registry cleaner,
which might have caused the problem.

It is far more likely that using the registry cleaner damaged something than
the defragger being at fault. Hopefully your registry cleaner has an "Undo"
feature. Use it.

I always recommend against people using these reigistry cleaners. They are
completely unneeded, and are far more likely to create a problem that to
solve one.

Thanks for all your replies. Yesterday I downloaded another registry repair
software, and it found 1600+ problems in my registries. It says it can repair
all of those if I pay 29.95. From your replies, I guess I can't trust that
promise? The only other problem I'm experiencing is that about an hour after
the windows starts, I can't open any more programs and I have to restart,
which is more annoying than windows crashing when started with network
connection, because I can always wait until windows starts before I connect
the cable. Do you have any suggestions other than complete reinstall of the
system? Thanks.

If they exist at all, they are probably all just orphaned entries, entries
that the program thinks are no longer needed. *If* the program is right (and
it's a very big "if"), removing them won't hurt you, but will also not help
you. Unused entries, other than taking up a tiny amount of extra disk space,
are meaningless and don't hurt you.

On the other hand, if the program is wrong about any of them, removing them
will certainly hurt you, perhaps very severely. Worst case, you may not be
able to boot.

Not only wouldn't I pay $29.95 for that, I wouldn't take it for free.

What does "I can't open any more programs" mean? What happens when you try?
If you get an error message, please quote it verbatim.

What have you been doing with the computer in that hour? Have you been
opening other programs? Opening Files?

Have you restricted the size of the paging file in any way? How much free
disk space do you have?

I almost never recommend complete reinstalling of the operating system. If
I, or someone else here, can't help you, you may have to fall back on it,
but it should be a last resort. One of the many problems with doing that is
that, if you never find out what was causing your problem, you're likely to
repeat the behavior that caused it, and quickly find yourself back where you
started.
