Hi,

I have a HP Pavilion 504n which is running Windows XP
Home Edition. After I had Auto Update automatically
install all update and I rebooted XP reported that it
could not start Windows.
It comes up with the black and white screen stating to
start in safe mode. I then started in safe mode and
restored back to prior to all the update and was able to
start it again.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Henri

Hi Henri,

I too had a similar problem with my new, (now over a year old) HP. After
some thought, and then reading here, I have decided, "if it ain't broke,
don't fix it!" In other words, if you are not having the specific problem
the update is for, don't install it as the update could wind up causing
problems rather than fixing anything. (As you and I found out the hard way)
The only updates I have installed sinse my crash, is security related ones
as none of the other updates have related to any problen on my computer. I
would suggest not keeping the "automatically install all updates" option, so
you can go through the list and choose for yourself wheather you need a
particular one or not.

Best regards, idaspud

Sandy,

The machine is not on a RAID. But I think the C: drive is on the IDE
bus as my CD ROM drive. Seems like you have some thoughts on that.

Keith,

Thanks for the advise. I'll try to just install the security once.
Actually, what I might try as well is install one update at a time to
which one is causing the problem. However, there are a ton to go
through it will take a long time.

Thanks,

Henri

Mostly just suspicions. I had some similar problems which I suspected were
due to my HD arrangement. It seemed as if some Win updates were defaulting
their installation to the IDE channel #1 master port even though that was
not my C: drive. When I disconnected the drive on this port the updates went
fine. In your case you may just want to make sure your C: drive is cabled to
IDE 1 and jumpered as master (and any other drive as slave). FWIW.
