I'm getting ready to buy a new computer with XP. I don't want to give up a couple of old programs that run well on 98SE and 2000. They are Amipro and Quattro Pro. Can anyone tell me BEFORE I buy the new computer if these will work on XP?

It depends on the version. Do a search on Google, such as "Amipro
Versionx + Windows XP". You'll get some useful links immediately. I can
tell you that I have a client running a DOS version of Quattro Pro on
their XP Pro machines.

If you still have them loaded on your old W98 machine, go to
www.pcpitstop.com and run the XP readiness test. It will
report on that computer, but also on the software installed.

Otherwise, try a Google thusly, "Amipro+XP" and "Quattro
Pro"+XP

Maybe somebody knows and will post.

Unless there's an issue with video, both programs should work OK in
XP. Most programs that run in Win2000 will likewise run in XP, but
there are always exceptions......

I've never run AmiPro, and don't know about it, but recent
versions of Quattro Pro run on Windows XP. Also note that it's
very unlikely that a program will run on Windows 2000 but not XP.
But run the Microsoft Upgrade Advisor at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp

AmiPro is the ancient Lotus word processor that ran in Win3.1x right?
Well, it might work fine, but I personally would not bet money on it..

Since I know you'll not be able to find much directly from Lotus, for
what it is worth the Win95/98 version of the Lotus SmartSuite (which
includes WordPro) does have definite problems running under WinXP. The
program runs but the interface for some of the apps is unuseable (I
won't bore you).

Also, if you're using such an ancient word processor, you might
actually like the current version of the open source suite called
OpenOffice. It is free and it runs in WinXP (see: www.openoffice.org).

Of course upgrading to new software just might leave you in search of
an import filter for your circa 1992 programs.

AmiPro was the original 16 bit program which was bought by Lotus and
formed the start point for Lotus WordPro. IIRC it was an entirely well
behaved 16 bit program which will work in the emulated 16 bit
environment (though of course with no knowledge of long file names),
but it may be necessary to adjust the config.nt and autoexec.nt to give
it adequate memory support. That emulation is less efficient than the
methods of running 16 bit programs in Win98 though.
