Is there a way to retrieve the XP activation Code Key from
somewhere in the regedit or system files. On a system that
is up and running. Need the key in case the Harddrive
crashes. My boy did not write it down when he got it from
MS. Just entered it as they told it to him. Lost the
original Code key that came with the OS CD.

The system is running And there IS a legal Code Key
somewhere in it. I need to know where it is. I do not want
a new key just the original that came with the darn thing.
I need to know where it is in the registration.

It's not in the registry for you to find. If you use the link that Will gave
you, it will extract the Key Code that was used to install XP and you can
write it down.

Follow the link that Will posted. Download and run the program and it will
tell you what the installed key is. It is not a new key generator, it tells
you what your key is. Your key is encrypted in the registry and only with a
program such as this can you see what it is.

Hi

If you download and run the keyfinder file on that web page you will see
your 25 alphanumeric PK.

Greetings --

The Windows 25-character Product Key (required to perform the
installation) is stored on the CD packaging on a bright orange sticker
that says "Do not lose this number." If it was an OEM (factory
installed) license, it's stored on a label that the PC manufacturer
affixed to the exterior of the PC case, or on the bottom of a laptop.

To recover a lost Product Key:

If your system still runs, you should be able to use AIDA32
Enterprise from http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php to find the Product
Key. (If you have a factory-installed OEM license, and haven't since
reinstalled the OS, the revealed Product Key is probably of the drive
image used at the factory and not _your_ specific Product Key;
therefore, it probably cannot be -- and definitely should not be --
used for a re-installation.)

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

If it was an OEM license, you should contact whomever sold you the
PC; although very few manufacturers/vendors keep records of the
Product Keys they've sold, it's worth a try before you have to buy a
new license.
