XP Clipboard malfunction -- copying as bitmap

I have a recurring problem with the Windows clipboard.
When I use Ctrl+C to copy text from a word processing
document, either in Word 2000 or in WordPerfect 9, a
bitmap image, rather than the text will be copied to the
clipboard. When I try to paste, I paste a screen-shot of
the word processing document.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Do you get a screenshot of the entire screen? (eg, can you see the
taskbar?). The 'text' you refer to may actually be a bitmap sitting inside
the word document. It's uncommon but it is known that some authors aren't
aware of the size difference you get when using text rather than a bitmap.
