Both CD-ROM and DVD drives have stopped reading, replaced
cables and reloaded still can not read. Drives show up in
My Computer, put a disk in the spinup and change the icon
to show that a disk is in the drive but they still cannot
read drive. Tested drives using a bootable disk and they
will read the disks and start the boot. Only have problem
in Windows XP Pro, have not installed SP2 yet. Any
Suggestions.

Are they allocated drive letters?

Right click on My Computer, select Manage... on the following screen, click
on Disk Management. Do they show up on the right hand side of the screen?

Both drive hav drive letters.

They show up every where they should and act like they are
ready to work, but they will not read from any disks,
except when you put in a bootable disk and reboot the
machine.

Larry,

I have the same problem as you do DVD-ROM and CD-RW drive
on system, my DVD-ROM won't read anything. Reads fine on
a win 98 DOS boot disk load. Let's see if this is a
common issue: Is your XP a clean install, or an upgrade
install? Mine was an upgrade install. I am lucky enough
to have a spare drive, and did a clean install on the
spare drive, booted to that system and my DVD-ROM works
fine there, just not on upgrade install. I want to find a
way to get it to work on the upgrade install without
dumping all my apps thru a clean install; i.e. just
fixing the problem drivers related to ATAPI devices not
reading disks.
