I've been using XP on my Dell for a few years now with no real problems. Two
days ago XP stopped registering my CD and DVD drives. Both drives open and
close but XP claims it can't find them (error 41) I initially thought it
might be a boot virus, but Mcafee couldn't find anything. Anyone have any
suggestions?

Hi wannabe-doc,

See if the information in this MSKB article helps you to resolve the
problem:

CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error code 31, code 32, code 19,
code 39, or code 41 after you remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=314060
(please note that although the article references Easy CD Creator, there are
other third-party software packages that will cause the same "problem" to
occur).

If you don't want to manually edit the registry, you can d/load and run the
registry patch that is available here:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
(look at the second "problem")

Regards,

Save the file below to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and
double click the file. A confirmation dialog will appear when the script is
done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect.

Restore CD/DVD in Explorer

CD Recording software will cause Windows to become unstable. Windows has
prevented these drivers from loading.
