XP boots to infinite loop at MS logo

L

Larry(LJL269)

My XPhome SP2 boots to infinite loop at 2nd(small) MS logo
with blue background. 3 sec retort sounds keep repeating &
logo screen reloads over & over.

Same happens if I try Safe Mode. All the following failed to
fix it:
Restoring last good configuration
Restoring previous days Registry
Deleting extra entries in BOOY.INI that were never
selected anyway

I now have BartsPE working so I can access the entire HDD so
I havent tried Recovery Console. Dont know what to do except
to drink single malt scotch :)

Your help is MUCH appreciated. Thanks- bye- Larry

Any advise given is my attempt to show appreciation for all
the excellent help I've received here but I'm no MVP so it
may only apply NUGS (Normally, Usually, Generally, Sometimes :)

Greetings & thank you for your response.

Great - I gotta replace the KERNAL ala
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310396
I had same problem when I copied this XP from a failing HD
to this new HD. I then restored an image of it & all was OK
for just 1 week.

I have 2 XP's installed on HD & have been booting EITHER 1
for yrs with 0 problems. In spirit of BartPE, I was
experimenting with booting 1 but leaving other (1st)
UNHIDDEN- use XP2 to repair XP1. So there r 2 sets of sys
files cause there are 2 WINDOWS folders visable! It was
after 2-3 runs in this configuration that this error
occurred for 2nd time. I've had unexpected behavior with
TweakIU & CHKDSK too so I'm prone to conclude that having 2
XP's UNHIDDEN is a bad idea. Would you agree?

I have little experience with BartPE or Recovery Console-
I'll try to replace KERNEL with BartPE 1st since I can use
Windows commands. This will be a learning experience. I have
2 images of OS that can be restored as a last resort.

Comments/suggestions/corrections appreciated.
Your help is MUCH appreciated. Thanks- bye- Larry

Did you UNcheck "Automatically restart on errors", or leave that set
as default? It's a ridiculous setting to leave enabled, especially
when the error arises during the OS boot process.

Also, by duhfault anything that crashes the RPC service will restart
the PC, though as I understand it, you get a countdown dialog first.
It's another good setting to change, say to "Restart the Service".

I don't know whether you can UI those settings via Bart. You could
use RunScanner and Regedit, if you know where to tackle then from
behind the UI; here's one of the two as a .REG

<paste>

REGEDIT4

; Disables "automatically restart on system errors"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl]
"AutoReboot"=dword:00000000

</paste>

Note that some tools that manage services will be rather YMMV from
Bart, even when used with RunScanner. This is because some service
management is cued off what is running (the Bart booted OS) rather
than registry settings (as redirectable via RunScanner).

I'd also step back and look for possible causes for STOP errors that
the dumb-ass "restart on errors" is hiding from you:
- RAM test in MemTest86
- HD physical test using www.hdtune.com (works from Bart)
- formal virus scan from Bart
- integration checks e.g. NirSoft, HiJackThis from Bart/RunScanner
- disconnect network
- disconnect all peripherals
- re-seat cards, especially SVGA

A failing HD can trigger a STOP error on every boot, if some core file
has a dead sector in it, or if paging operations fail (try deleting
pagefile.sys from Bart to avoid that)

If you do get to see a STOP error code, Google it - that's how I
learned about several that are to do with file systems and virtual
memory paging failures due to hard disk trouble.

Greetings & thank you for your response. My tardy response
is due to 3 days of diagnostics at hospital.

EE friend suggested NTUSER's may be bad. I rolled back all
of C:\Documents and Settings\ from image of XP ~1 wk old. It
worked. I love Image4windows!

TY for ur thorough response & I apologise 4 my tardiness.
