XP requires that the system boot with the XP install disk in the CD drive.
How do you get around this??

XP doesn't require this. It sounds as though you have an invalid entry in
your boot.ini file. Try the following, go to Start and type MSCONFIG in the
run box and press enter. Go to the Boot.ini tab and click "Check All Boot
Paths."

If that doesn't resolve it you'll need to edit the boot.ini file on your
own. Open Windows Explorer, go to Tools, select folder options, go to the
view tab, under "Hidden files and folders" be sure to select "Show Hidden
Files and Folders" and remove the checks from the Hide options below that
selection. Click apply and ok.

Go to the C drive, open boot.ini.
Assuming you have a single boot setup, no other operating systems and a
standard setup, your boot.ini should look similar to the following:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

If you see a reference in yours to the CD-ROM drive or something similar,
you should remove it.

Where did you get the idea that XP requires the install disk to boot?
Once XP has been setup properly and is running, it'll boot from the
hard drive.

Go into your CMOS setup program and correctly set the boot order of
your machine. You should be booting from the hard drive, not CD or
Floppy, or anything else. To learn how to get into CMOS setup,
consult your user manual. (Some computers have a utility to set the
boot order from within Windows.)
