XP boot loops upon cold startup?

We recently upgraded one of our WinNT 4.0 Workstation
machines to XP, using one large NTFS partition.
Everything is great, except that when the computer is cold
booted it goes through the XP boot process and shuts down
again 4-5 times before it gets a complete boot and gives
us a login prompt. Anyone have ideas? Further info
available on request.
