Can anyone recommend a good manual for XPHome? - I've been
told WindowsXP Inside Out and Windows XP For Dummies are
OK but there seem so many on the market.

It's terrific for reference, but perhaps not as good for learning, but
O'Reilly's "XP in a Nutshell" is pretty good.

Those are the two I would suggest - the 'Dummies' one as an
introduction, the 'Inside out' at a more advanced, but still
understandable, level of technical detail
