XP Automatic Updates

When attempting to update Windows XP using automatic
updates have tried to install the update "express install"
but it fails, with following messages :

The following update was not installed :
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and
WinHTTP5.1 (KB842773).

Anyone out there got any ideas ? Would gladly do "manual"
updates but can't find anywhere on microsoft website to do
this. All roads lead back to Express or Custom install,
and in neither case can I install the program.
