XP and XP2?

I've read the posts about SP2 being cumulative, so that you don't need SP1.

1) My PC manufacturer (HP) has a couple updates that are supposed to be
installed on a PC with XP and SP1 (Per HP, "These updates are to be applied
to PCs with Microsoft Windows XP SP1 installed.") . Since these are not
Microsoft updates, they would not be in SP2. So, in this situation I would
need to install SP1 first? (also have question out to HP but their response
is slowwww.)

2) HP states that SP2 may not install properly without SP 1 already
installed. Is this "true"?

3) What is SP 1a?

also have question out to HP but their response is slowwww.

Wondering what happened to their "Rapid-response" e-mail team?

SP2 supercedes SP1 in its entirety, so go ahead and just
install SP2. SP1a is the same as SP1 except that the
Microsoft Virtual Machine was removed from SP1
as part or an agreement with Sun Microsystems.

You should not need to install SP1 first. SP2 includes everything that was
in SP1 plus a number of additional updates and enhancements. As long as
the PC has SP1 or higher, you should be OK.
2) HP states that SP2 may not install properly without SP 1 already
installed. Is this "true"?

Generally, no this is not true. This would be an HP specific requirement.
Not that I would put anything past HP, but MS has put nothing in SP2 that
makes SP1 a requirement for installation. Before installing SP2 on your HP
machine, you should look over this site -
http://www.hp.com/pond/windowsxp/index.htm.
3) What is SP 1a?

SP1a is SP1 without Microsoft's version of their java virtual machine.
There are no other differences between SP1 and SP1a.

I think you'll need to ask that question of HP. Since SP2
includes SP1, installing those updates after SP2 is installed
(without first installing SP1) may meet their criteria of
installing them after SP1.

(also have
question out to HP but their response is slowwww.)

No. Not unless there's something special about their system.

3) What is SP 1a?

SP1 included the Microsoft Java Virtual machine. A later court
decision took away Microsoft's right to distribute this, and SP1a
is identical to SP1 without the Java Virtual machine. So the two
are the same, except that if you use SP1a, you have to download
and install the Java Virtual Machine separately.

It should be noted that HP has some patches for their systems that need
to be installed *before* installing SP2. I would download them and
install them. If it turns out you needed SP1 first, there should be an
error message. Or the OP could check with HP support first.

Thanks for all of the responses.

1) HP's support emails - once they arrive - can be difficult to read......

2) My About box reads v5.1, (Build 2600, xpclient.010817-1148). There is no
mention of SP1 (or SP1a) let alone SP2.

Does this make a difference?

You apparently don't have any Service Packs installed. I would download
the HP patches, if any, for your specific model machine. Install any
that need to be installed before SP2. Then, after completing all
preparation for SP2 (machine must be 100% spyware and virus-free),
install SP2.
