I will have to purchase a new PCU this weekend. The ones I am looking have
have Vista loaded. All the docs that I have saved are XP. At work, my
computer is XP. My question is, will I be able to use doc created at home
with Vista at work on XP and vice versa? Help! Thanks!

XP and Vista are operating systems. Documents are created in applications,
like Microsoft Word. In order to open files you've created in a particular
program, you will need to have the same program installed on your new
computer - or a similar program installed that is able to read those file
formats.

So it doesn't matter that you created the documents in some program running
on an XP machine. What matters is that you have that program installed on
the Vista box.

Microsoft Office - a suite of office applications including Word, Excel,
PowerPoint and others depending on the version you buy - has never been
part of any Windows operating system.

So if I have Microsoft office(With word and powerpoint) installed on my home
computer using the Vista operating system, and Microsoft office installed at
school using XP they will be compatible. My computer at school will be able
to open and read doc made at home.

Yes. If they are different editions of Office, say Office 2003 on one and
Office 2007 on the other it is a good idea to save your docs in the Office
2003 format. The OS Office is running on is irrelevant.

The issue with document compatibility has to do with the applications
used to create and read them. It has nothing to do with what operating
system you use.

If you have the same application (or a compatible one) installed under
Vista as you had under XP, yes, you can read and edit their files in
either place.
