XP and Toshiba Laptop

My father had a new laptop with XP Home Edition, but I
tried to upgrade to professional. It didn't work, it
wouln;t allow me to install IIS or Dialup. I made a
mistake, by not creating a separate partition so I
overwrote Home with Professional.

I then created a separate partition and put a clean
installation of Profesional, but this has crashed.

How can I create a boot up cd with cdrom drivers for XP
using Nero?

Cheers

The only question I see is the last one. For this, best to read the
manual and/or help file for Nero.

For the unasked questions about messing up XP ... Don't know what went
wrong, but I would not recommend the solution be to have a separate
partition for Home and XP. That's not only a waste of disk space, but
will be confusing and may not work. XP and XP Home are identical
operating systems except that XP has added functionality/applications
around networking, encryption, etc.

Suggest go back to 1 partition. Boot off the disk that Toshiba gave you
to install XP Home, then apply the XP Pro upgrade.

I read the warranty documentation for my Toshiba Satellite and upgrading
software does not void the warranty for the hardware. I suspect Toshiba
won't, and do not expect them to, to respond to my requests for support
on Windows XP Pro since I did not purchase the license via them.

The problem is - if you ever have to send your Satellite back to
Toshiba or take it to a repair depot, you will have to restore the
original OS before they'll work on it. Or, if they do consent to
work on it, they'll restore the OS first - overwriting all your data
and the copy of Pro.

BTW, I too own a Satellite - with purchased extended warranty. Give
the folks at Toshiba a call (free call) and inquire.

Regards.

While that's true, there may be quite a bit of help available via the Toshiba
Laptop Computing Forum. I've had good answers to a number of my questions
there.

Here is a recent reply to somebody who was in a similar situation:

"Installing a different OS will not void your warranty.

However, most manufacturers will only support your system with the original OS
installed. So if you have a problem with the system and try to call for
technical support, you may be told that you'll have to put the old OS back on
before the tech will assist you. Also, a different OS may require different
drivers for your accessories or a different BIOS, and there is no assurance such
drivers or BIOS will be exist for the new OS. So if your mouse pointer stops
working, you may have to live with it or find a different source for drivers,
which can be difficult.

In your case, upgrading to XP Pro should not be a problem if you have sufficient
memory and disk space and you do it properly. In particular, do not simply
upgrade over an existing XP Home OS; install fresh from scratch with a clean
hard hard drive. Make sure you have the latest BIOS installed first, and check
the Toshiba web site for the latest drivers."
