XP and Maxtor big drive issue

Windows XP has a problem recognizing the full capacity of a 300 gig Maxtor
drive. It should format to 279 gig, but XP limits it to 128 or 132.

Thoughts?

Hi,

You need at least SP1 installed and the BIOS must also support it.

Rick,

Thanks for the reply.

Running SP2, but I'm sure how to enable BIOS support. I've tried some Intel
patches, but still no luck. The computer is a Dell Inspiron laptop, P4, etc.

Harry,

Thanks for the reply. The slipstreaming fix is technically over my head.
I'm running XP Pro SP2. My problem seems to be a BIOS issue. Ultimately I
may need to purchase an enclose with the 48 bit LBA.

Thanks,

Stu

Try slipstreaming SP1 or SP2 into your Windows XP installation disc. See
instructions here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/slipstream.htm

Fixed by SP1. You are a might behind times.

Hi Stu,

Check with Dell for a BIOS update, it must support 48 bit LBA.

You are running a P4. The issue isn't the BIOS. Slipstreaming is easy and
should solve the problem. Just follow the advice. It is a cake walk.

By the way a BIOS upgrade can have dire consequences if not done correctly.
I'd definitely create a slipstreamed CD first and see if that worked.
