XP Activation

I have a situation that I am wanting to fix and I am needing some assistance.

Appoximately one month ago, I purchased a used laptop and wanted to test it
out to see if it was worth keeping. It was a Sunday evening and I was not
able to get another Product Key for Windows XP so I simply used the Product
Key from my desktop PC. My intent was that if the laptop was worthwhile, I
would go and get another copy of Windows XP and install it on the laptop.

I found that the laptop was in good condition but other priorities pulled me
away and I ended putting the laptop away for the last month. During that
time the 30-day activation period has expired. I have purchased another copy
of Windows XP and I was now ready to set things straight.

I started the laptop and it said that I had to go ahead with activation. It
was my expectation that during the activation process, it would determine
that the Product Key being used on the laptop was already activated on the
desktop PC and would prompt me for another Product Key, which I would provide
with the new copy of Windows XP. This did not happen. It simply said that
activation completed successfully.

I now have two PC's using the same Product Key. It was my understanding
that this was not possible. How is this going to affect my desktop PC? Is
it at some point going to give me a activation violation message and not
allow me start my desktop PC?

How do I fix this issue?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Nobody ever said it could not be done...........its just not legal and
against the EULA which you agreed to when you installed it the first time on
the PC.
If you wish to be legal just install your purchased copy either over the
version thats there now or format during the install and get rid of the
other version.Note that formatting will also delete whatever else you have
on the Laptop.
good luck..........expect a lot of replies to this
