XP - 98 Networking (Very strange)

Mike

I have a 3 computer BNC network consisting of 2 WinXP Pro. PCs and one
98Se PC. The 98Se PC functions as a Server and Router with ICS. Please
don't ask why I am using such a strange constellation but I have my
reasons :).
Well the connection between the two XP computers is working fine
(about 700Kb/s) and the connection between one XP computer and the
98se PC is working fine also (the same speed). But the link between,
of course my XP computer and the server is very very very slow
(12Kb/s). The installation of XP is more or less identical and my NIC
driver can't be the cause because they work with the XP PC.
Some more details:
I'm using static IPs:
Server (98): 192.168.0.1
XP (not mine): 192.168.0.2
XP (mine): 192.168.0.3

Subnet 255.255.255.0 on all three.
Workgroup is HOME

The connection is in both direction this slow, I mean no matter if I
copy from or to my computer.
I tried to set MTU on my computer and the 98 computer to 1500 but that
didn't help. I tried to delete the registry entry ...\Namespace\{....}
(don't know exactly) but it didn't help.

Please help it's awful! I'm even not able to listen to mp3s from the
server because the connection is too slow!!!! It's really bothering me
and I was not able to find a solution.

greetings

That seems to be a problem with ICS. Stop using it and BUY a router. It's
that simple.

I don't think that ICS has anything to do with the problem, Shootist.
ICS is just a program running on the server computer. How could it
affect network connection speeds?

Mike, you can use this program to set MTU:

The problem could be with the network wiring. Make sure that each
computer's network card has a T-connector, and that the T-connectors
on both ends of the coaxial cable have 50-Ohm terminators.

Thank You... But that does not seem to be an accurate solution for me!
I'm looking for a technical explanation and for some tips how I can
solve this bug. I would agree with you if both xp computers wouldn't
work fast but as I and you see it is possible to have a normal "fast"
network connection.

BTW I didn't mention that I had installed Linux before WinXP and under
Linux the network was as slow as it is now. I thought it would be a
configuration problem but how can it be one? I'm afraid it is the NICs
fault. Damned. I can't find the correct configuration I think and no
newer drivers are available for my card: billionton LNT10TB. So I
guess I have to update my server to xp but there is no driver for the
servers NIC for XP :-(.
Never mind I will move to my own flat soon and then there will be no
network problems anymore :).
Anyway if anybody could still give me some hints I would really
appreciate it.

nice greetings
mike
