XP & 98 Network trouble

E

Eric Robson

I have one PC running XP Pro, acting as file server, using 2nd hard drive. 2
networked PCs running W98 (in process of upgrading) access the XP Pro PC to
share files. Setup using simple file sharing and peer to peer networking (no
domain server).

Access looks fine but we are now having severe performance problems on W98
PCs, with hangs, "blue screens", permission errors, slow file access.

A Linksys router on the network hands out IP addresses and internet access,
via this router is fine.

Any suggestions?

Eric,

flee forward and upgrade 98SE to XP.

Short of that, have you tried to remove all networking
components, reboot, and add them again? Sometimes this gets
things back into working order.
