Does anyone have a comment on whether it is
possible/good/bad to get an AMD Athlon, SQL Server 2003 64
bit, and XP 64 bit and run them on a laptop?

Greetings,

First of all Windows XP 64bit would be released next year. Secondly, here
are details :)

That would be WinXP 64 bit for AMD Athlon, the 64 bit version for
Intel Itanium is already out. Recent statements from MS indicate that
the AMD Athlon version won't come out until sometime in 2005.

Hello Linda,
You may need to check with SQL to see if they have a 64-bit release that
will run on the X64 platform.
The SQL 2003 64-bit release was for the IA-64 platform/

It's good to get the hardware, as for software, there is no Windows XP
64-bit edition at this time although a beta version is available (but
it is a long way from ready for prime time, you'll have to find all the
drivers, etc. yourself)

This may not be a valid part of your answer but there are several
distributions of Linux that are 64 bit and they've been available for
quite some time and work very well. I know Mandrake, SuSE and Fedora
Project (Redhat) have 64 bit versions, don't know about others.
