Many XP Help file screens display the characters "XOX" instead of useful
infomation, and clicking Related Links gives "Cannot display the page"
message.

No Visual Studio installed (at least, I never installed it). I had found that
post in the KB.

There are several reasons for this problem:

Clear the Temporary Internet Files
-----------------------------------
Close all Internet Explorer windows
Type INETCPL.CPL in Start, Run dialog
Click the Delete Files button
Select Delete all offline content and click OK
Click OK to close the dialog

Clear the contents of the TEMP folder
---------------------------------------

Type %TEMP% in Start, Run dialog
Select all files in the Temp folder and delete them

With all due respect to Ramesh and all the other MVPs who have worked on this, unfortunately there is no guaranteed way out of this problem.

Many solutions have been published on the web and each appears to help /some/ users, but there is no solution or set of solutions that works for all or even most users.

I have had this problem myself on two separate occasions. The first time I solved it by temporarily relocating TIF. That didn't help the second time it happened. I fixed the problem then by resetting the security options for the My Computer zone.

It would be helpful if we understood the underlying cause(s) of this problem - that's the beginning of a workable solution for all (or hopefully most) users.

Well, I deleted all those Internet and other temp files, then opened Help to
"What's New?" and saw "XOX brims with new features, ..." so I guess that
didn't work. Will check out the winxptutor ref.

Ted,

Yes. That's another possibility, and if you see my response above, I've
included a link to my WinXPTutor.com page which explains how to relax the
local zone security settings.

Okay, I checked those Registry settings Ramesh pointed to in winxptutor.com.
The Zone 0 setting for 1400 were already set to 0. Anyone have any other
ideas?

Ted Zieglar posted this long back:

And here is what finally solved my problem:

Move TIF somewhere else; let XP log you out; log back in; move TIF back to
where it was originally; let XP log you out; and log back in. Voila! Why
this works I have no idea. It just works.

I'm still left with the minor annoyance that H & S doesn't think I'm
connected to the internet. The home page says "When you are connected to the
Internet, this area will display links to timely help and support
information...etc." That's no big deal, really, because I can still connect
to the MSKB and Windows Update through H & S. In fact there are two MSKB
articles that describe this problem, but both refer to DSL connections and I
have cable.

For now, I'm happy I have the Help and Support Center back. Thanks for
reading. Hopefully this will help someone else.

Sorry to be dense, but I don't know what TIF is. I also am on a single-user
system and don't log in to XP. Would you please give me a little guidance
here?

Thanks,

TIF is Temporary Internet Files.

All users - even a single user - log in with Windows XP because that's how
the operating system works. If a Windows XP computer only has one user and
that user's account is not password-protected, the operating system
automatically logs you in.

You, my friend, need to password-protect your account.

Thanks for the advice, Ted. I'll consider a PW, even though the only other
person with access to my system is a very computer-phobic spouse.

I tried moving the TIF files; still get the XOX notation in Help. Maybe I'll
have to wait for the new and (hopefully) improved Windows next year(?).

The password is not for protection against your "computer-phobic" spouse.
It's to help protect you from malicious software that may somehow, despite
your best efforts, find its way onto your computer. The password is one more
hurdle to surmount if a virus or spyware wants to cause havoc on your
computer.

As I mentioned, Ramesh and many others have worked hard to develop solutions
to the 'XOX problem'. And these solutions have worked for many people in
various circumstances. But there doesn't seem to be a sure fix or set of
fixes (or workarounds) that work for most people most of the time.

IMHO, something is fundamentally broken in Help and Support, which is a pity
since Microsoft obviously invested a great deal of effort to make H & S an
informative, helpful tool. And it is a very useful tool...until it breaks.

Ted,

Thanks for your explanation on the need for a password; I will set one up
today.

I found a few more things to try, in another Internet posting (files
ntshared.chm, ntdet.chm, hh.dat, etc.), but still no luck. I'd have to agree
there is something basically broken in H&S, but I have to move on to other
work now. With all the links I found in the past week, surely MS is aware of
this glitch by now (although I sure couldn't find an applicable reference in
the KB.

Thanks again to you and all who offered suggestions.
