[XNEWS] Slow update of INI file

M

Mark M

When I update the user account name and its password for a single
news server in Xnews, then Xnews locks up and takes as long as five
or more seconds just to save my changes

Can I speed this up?

I don't know if there is some file locking going on (at a system
level or application level). Maybe Xnews has to update several INI
files when the Setup window is changed? Or maybe XP does some file
locking for Xnews on another partition.

The system is WinXP Pro running on NTFS with *all* Xnews files stored
on another partition which is FAT32. All the Xnews INI files are
between 1 KB to 5 KB, so they are small and should normally update
quickly.

Any ideas?

Five seconds is a major problem? How often do you do this?

It can be 5 to 10 seconds. And I do this fairly frequently. It is a
nuisance for me.

: It could be something to do with XP, which I have, too. Where Xnews
: frequently locks up for me is when I attempt to Save Newsrc or Close
: the server. And it is not seconds, but minutes! Many times I have to
: walk away from the PC because I can't stand looking at it. When Xnews
: freezes, then my whole PC is frozen waiting for Xnews. It seemed to
: have gotten worse now that I have more NG added. I kinda think that XP
: has latched onto Xnews and doesn't want to let go.

Try hitting http://www.sysinternals.com and using some of the free tools
there to poke around what is happening on your system when you get the
lockup.
