XLS to MHT bloat

I habe a 165 KB XLS file that when converted to an MHT is 11,921 KB. Yes,
almost TWO orders of magnitude increase! Is this right? Is this a joke? Is
MHT not really a file format that can be used? I was hoping to put some XLS
stuff on the intranet and still be able to edit, sort, that kind of thing.
Any suggestions?

HTML is inherently bloated compared to binary formats but that is
extraordinary. I have had little experience using this format but for
comparison I just now saved a 500K file with interactiviity and it went to
3.8G (almost 8 times bigger). What's in your workbook that caused your
expansion I have no idea.

Quite apart from the bloat issue that's a good question. I've found the
spreadsheet component (the thingy that mimics Excel on a web page) to be
sufficiently different from Excel and of such poor performance with larger
files to make it, ahhh, not a good option.

Have you found your changes saved when saved from within IE? Mine aren't.
