xbox 360 controller not working on Vista

I am running Windows Vista (32 bit). I have 2 working 360 controllers. I have
tried both of them on my Vista PC and neither one works properly.

I installed the Microsoft Xbox 360 controller software, plug in the
controller, Vista discovers new hardware but does not recognize the device
(Unknown Hardware). And when I have it search for the driver, it doesn't find
anything. I even tried pointing to the directory where the driver is, and
that didn't work either.

My controllers both work fine on my 360. I have no idea why they are not
working, but would appreciate some help... if anyone happens to know what
this problem is or how to resolve it.

Thanks!

Thanks for the quick response. The articles are pretty straight forward, but
I am still having issues.

Here is what I have done so far...
I uninstalled the Microsoft Xbox 360 Accesseries software. I also unplugged
my Nostromo N52 in case it was causing any conflicts. I unplugged the Xbox
360 contorller. I reinstalled the Microsoft Xbox 360 Accesseries software
and then plugged in the controller. Vista prompts me with "New Hardware
Found (Unknown Device)" at which point I select "Search computer for driver"
and it does not find one... even if I point to the folder where I just
installed the software. It says, WIndows could not find a software driver for
your device. In device manager, the controller shows up as an unknown
decvice :(

I am Running Windows Vista 32 bit on a new Dell XPS 720 PC. Not sure what
the problem could be. I have seen a few other people with the same problem
in other tech forums, but have not seen a solution yet.

What is this 360 xbox software you are intalling prior to plugging in
the controller?

I use my wired 360 controller just fine with Vista and never needed
to install any software prior to plugging in the controller.

Try removing that software and rebooting then just plug the
controller in Vista will recognize it install the correct drivers
and all will be fine.

Are you using the USB remote designed for the computer, or are you trying to
use your charge and play cable? It will NOT work with the charge and play
cable.
