XanaNews newsreader?

B

Ben A Gozar

I like it, it is simple to use and does a good job. Unfortunately I am
addicted to XNews, but if XNews wasn't around...

XanaNews newsreader. Is it any good?

tOm

I have been using XanaNews for 4 months now after trying every other
newsreader I could download. It is an excellent newsreader and very
fast compared to the favorites around here like Xnews and Dialog. Try
it out for yourself and see if you don't end up using it more often
than your current one. It also has two forums where you can discuss
the program with an author who takes suggestions and is responsive to
support questions.

I think it's very good, although I'm still switching between it and others
while I get up to speed on the settings and and K/B shortcuts. It's also
open source, which is a very good thing. (think Firefox, Linux, etc.). I
too, tried them all over the years.

It will the new standard in awhile, methinks..

That's quite a statement. I hope you're right.

Does it have a killfile? I'd like to try something new, but a killfile
is a must. :)

Oh, yeah. But, I have to warn you, it's got a whole lot of settings to
adjust. My hope is that, becasue this is open source, somebody will take it
and make a lite version. Kinda like what happened to the Mozilla browser, a
few spun off Firefox, which is the defacto standard for the ordinary that
knows better than to use IE, but aren't computer whizes either..............

AS for Xana, everytime I say "I sure wish it would..........." I find out it
*does*, I just hadn't found it before.......

Le us know (after a couple of weeks) how you like it. It will take you that
long to adjust it to your preferences.

Just trying it. Pretty impressive.

I've just begun using it, and am mostly favorably impressed.

But I've already asked two questions in the support forum.

1) I haven't been able to figure out how to use a sig. file with
XanaNews. It's probably stated somewhere, but I haven't been able to
figure out where/how.

2) I want all read files to be deleted, gone, no longer there when I
come back to a newsgroup -- automatically.

Alternatively, Get Messages-and look for all the choices.

How lite do you want it? Are you just turned off by the choice of
options? In the forums we're always asking for more options. It is
true there are features I haven't learned to use yet, but at least they
are there if I ever bother to try. The one thing I wish it had was the
Watched Conversation feature of OE where watched threads are kept at
the top of the Message Pane. That was a very handy feature I miss.
But it makes up for it by automatically coloring entire threads you
have participated in or been replied to, etc.

Thanks! That seems to do it!

No, I'd like to get rid of the msg #'s, which clutter up the screen. I'd
like to see ALL user settings for *viewing* in one place. All the settings
for default use under one place. All settings dealing with net connections
in one plac, that kind of thing. Maybe a *lite* version and a button to
change to *advance* like is on POP Peeper. Maybe I just haven't played with
it enough.........BUT it's still my choice over anything else I've ever
used! I know, I know.......everybody always wants more options. But in my
experience, when you try and be all things to all people you end up being
lukewarm to all......Think Windowze....

You can pick and choose what message headers you want displayed.
Message numbers are something I have shut off also. The only headers I
have are Subject, Author, Date.

Options could be all put under options window. The only difference is
Accounts and Newsgroups have their own options window. Yes, I always
want more options because I insist on customizing to my taste, not
necessarily someone else's.

To tell you the truth, I use Windows XP, Windows 2000, Red Hat Linux 7,
SGI Irix nearly every day and sometimes Mac OS X; personally my
favorite is Windows 2000. It is very amusing to me that the software
programmers at work are slowly dumping their Linux boxes for Windows
ones, much to the chagrin of the other system administrator.

That wouldn't surprise me. The multitude of settings in Gravity were a
bit overwhelming at first also.

Thanks for the tips!

That's handy. Sometimes I do only want to throw a bozo in temporarily,
while he or she is being particularly obnoxious. :)
