Right i need to a graphics card my 9200 isn't good enough
for my athlon 64 3200+ , so i was gonna get a 6800 ultra but am i better off
getting a X800??? ...does it have any advantages??

Yes, it supports 3dc tech which will be useful cause half-life2 uses
these types of maps. You need to see the screen shots to appreciate how
much better HL2 will look vs any nvidia card.

original idea of your own. More than likely, you are just a jealous old
fart who can't afford a new PC on there government pension allowance.
Get a Nintendo or a Gameboy, thats what other plebs would be using in

Problems? Was working fine for me 6 months ago when I took it out for a
spin with CS.

The Nvidia takes up two slots, it takes a lot more power (recommended 480W i
think), x800 xt does better than any other card in tests, although it is not
as good at 3d work in 3d max and lightwave, the x800 is more than adequite.
and the next flurry of games which include half life 2 and doom 3 will make
the best of the x800, but saying that, I read somewhere that the nvidia has
some new inovations which will make it last a bit longer and be able to
handle the next, next gen games using things like skin shaders and stuff (as
you can tell I didnt read much on it), plus, and this is the clincher, the
x800 xt is a lot cheaper.

Have fun with whatever card you choose, I personally am waiting for my X800
XT to come through.

So the decision is between an X800XT and a 6800 Ultra.

Well, without any brand bias at all I can tell you that the fact that the
X800XT takes up only 1 slot where the 6800 takes 2 would sell me. Add on top
of that these things, and it's a no brainer: the X800XT requires less power
(6800 recommends 480watt PSU - X800 has no such requirement), only 1 molex
connector where the 6800 requires two molex connectors, runs cooler
resulting in lower case temperature than with 6800, has lower stock db level
(it's quieter than 6800), outperforms the 6800 in most benchmarks.

3DC is a nice feature for normal map compression but it's not enough to sway
me one direction or the other.

Let's see:

6800 - 2 slots - lots more power needed
DirectX9c - OpenGL 1.5

x800 - 1 slot - lots less power needed
DirectX9b - OpenGL 2.0

Now dx9c support in software is cool, but no games use it and there isn't
even a dx9c yet! (So the *only* 9b in hardware at this time makes perfect
sense) And why they only went Ogl 1.5 and ATI went 2.0?

People are talking about PCI-express 6800 SLI, but come on! New mobo and
two cards? I can't afford that now, and the gains on PCI-express right now
are otherwise are negligible.

I broke my piggy on my AMD64bit upgrade, but I like the potential.
(Hopefully by the time I can afford the x800 I will have good drivers for XP
64bit!)

So for great majority of users, another non-issue.

You can't get either right now so I would call
them 'unavailable'. At least that's the situation in the US.
I was refering to the MSRP which is $499.99 for both cards.
I imagine that eventually, both will drop below the MSRP,
but that is a prediction, not a fact.
