X800 and WMV HD material

Hey all,

I build my own stuff and all works well (usually). I use it primarily for
gaming/htpc type activities. I often want to use it on my RCA 52 inch tv
and love to showcase the HD content you can get from:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/content_provider/film/ContentShowcase.aspx
which is Windows Media Players High Def stuff if you have not seen it
before. Im sure most of you have. Anyways, I have the latest version of
Catalyst running and I fear its having a codec conflict with my other
Xvid/Divx/VLC tidbits on my machine. By the way, my machine is this:

Amd 64 3000+ (socket 754)
1 gig Crucial 3200
1 sata 80 gig
1 ide 80 gig
oem Ati X800 XL agp
2 dvd/rw drives
Xp Pro sp2

It always does fine as I "try" my best to keep codecs to a minimum. But
then I get greedy and want to do something that will sometimes conflict. I
work for the cable companies and try software to access their boxes. Im
sure some of that may come into play. But, I dont know if there is a
certain taboo that Im doing with WMV and my X800 and Catalyst. I usually
dont run the catalyst software, but I did for simplicity this time.

Any advice on figuring out codec/software conflicts with WMV 10 and the Ati
X800 card besides my own mistakes?

Thanks all,

SL

Exactly what error messages are you seeing? Media Player crashing? Showing a
blank screen?

There's nothing wrong with having a bunch of codecs. I probably have 15-20
on my machine. The key is to install the codecs in a "bundle"; all the
codecs in there have been tested to work together. A good one is the KLite
Codec Pack, available here:
http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/mirror.htm . Make sure you uninstall all your
existing codecs (including Quicktime and RealMedia) before installing the
KLite Codec Pack.

BTW, once you get things working, try the videos here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...02-b529-469e-ae6a-7417fcde9e12&displaylang=en
These are more demanding, most are 1280x720, but at 60 fps.

It stutters, plays fine, goes black (not bsod) and ends up with a VPU error
recover. I can play at full res on all video games without any hangs and
temps are normal. Its just any version of HD material produces these
results. It was fine at first (last rebuild appx 2 months ago) but ive
loaded other stuff and never tried to play HD stuff again until recently.
Even your link produced the same results.

Thanks,

I saved via system restore to make sure I still had a running pc :)

Anyways, after the restore, I removed the Nimo pak first and tried the HD
playback. It worked just fine on all media. I cannot remember why I used
that one in the first place. I think I was missing a particular divx
extension. It works fine now though.

thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving,
SL
