X1950 XTX: How long is it?

M

mb

I'm currently using an ATI X850 XT Platinum Ed. in my Dell XPS Gen 5
with dual 160 gb hard drives in RAID 0. I'd like to upgrade to the
X1950 XTX, but with all the X1900 series cards I keep reading about how
long they are posing potential installation problems. Having said that
I can't find a single description of the actual dimensions of the card.
So, how long is it?

Now that everyone has had a good laugh I have another dumb question.

I understand the X1900 series requires a separate PCI-E power connector.
My X850 is PCI-E, so without unhooking everything and opening the case,
does that mean I necessarily already have the proper connections? The
way I have my desk set up getting my case out and open is a job and I'd
like to avoid that until the actual upgrade. Thanks in advance.

About 21,5 cm it seems (didn't have anything to directly take measure
with here, but compared it against the short side a a A4-sheet (197
mm), and it about 1,5 cm longer. Then you also have to take the lenght
of the PCI-E-Powerconnector into consideration, which is about 1 cm
extra.

There will be a connector provided with your X1950XTX-board. But, I
belive all X850 XT/X850 XT PE boards I have seen also needed this
connector. E.g.: Take a look at this:
http://www.kingbo.com/Product_photo/sapphire/X850XT.jpg -- the black
connector in the upper right corner is the PCI-E-power.

230 mm (just over 9 in.), according to
<http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2006/02/10/radeon_x1900_series_roundup/4.html>
It's the same length as the 7900GTX, its closest competitor.

In my Lian-Li conventional ATX tower (case opens on the left side), the PCIe
power connector actually overlaps with the hard drive cage. I shifted the
hard drives by one slot in the cage to clear it.

Yes. In the unlikely event Dell decided to go against the grain and ordered
the X850 with a 4-pin IDE or (worse) floppy connector, you can always buy an
adapter cable.

You will probably have to take a few measurements for the video card length
anyway. Spending 15 min to take a look inside will allow you spot problems
early.

Hi

I own an Arctic Cooling T1 midi tower. I wanted to upgrade with an ATI
X1900XT, but the card is too long. I will buy a GeForce 7950GT card, its
about 20cm long.

If you move your hard drive to the upper 3.5" bays instead of using the
silly "HDD muffler", the X1900XT should fit.

Whether the T1 tower's fixed, non-upgradable Seasonic 350W PSU has enough
capacity for the X1900XT is quite another matter. The card draws 109W under
peak 3D load.

I suppose I'll have to break down and open the case, but the
documentation that came with my Dell Gen 5 computer lists the power
supply at 450 watts.

Note my PSU comment was referring to Ziegler's system. A Dell 450W unit
should have no problems with powering one X1950XTX.
