Sounds to me like it won't be freeware

I'm holding on to my v6.3 setup file just in case. v6.5 is pretty, but not
that much different in function from v6.3, so it won't be a great loss.

"Beginning with X-Setup Pro 7.0 we will require home users to buy a
license as well."

It's their perogative to go $ware, but there are lots of other tweaker
freeware programs out there.

Besides, I used X-Setup to try to remove the "Files or folders..."
listing from the start menu's search command, but it messed things up
so I tried to undo it using the program. This changed things so that I
now have

"Files or folders"

*AND*

"For Files or folders..."

(note the additional "For" in the command). I sent two emails to Xteq,
but they never responded.

"What does this mean for you? The biggest change of X-Setup Pro will mainly
affect all home users, which are now offered a free license. All further
releases of X-Setup Pro before 7.0 (starting with 6.5 and ending with 6.9)
will remain in the current license schema which means that home users can
still get X-Setup Pro for free. Beginning with X-Setup Pro 7.0 we will
require home users to buy a license as well."

This is for the flowers, who have no appreciation for beauty;
And the sheer ugliness of it all will surely be lost on them.

On the bright side, the next paragraph sets the price at 8 USD -- which, to
me, seems like a pretty fair price for those who might like to upgrade past
6.x.

That's about what I'd pay for a good, thick paperback novel. I can't
believe that as much work went into writing X-Setup as goes into
writing a good paperback novel. More like about what goes into putting
together a cheap comic book.

Software is ludicrously overpriced. Period. That's why I'm so big into
freeware.

Ouch--harsh. Certainly some good points in there, but I do find [some]
software worth paying for -- my argument would be that it is not so much a
consideration of the amount of work that goes into it but, rather, the
amount of use I might get from it -- While I /love/ a good book, there are
very few that get as much use as a favorite software program -- for
example, my e-mail client -- certainly it cost more than any book I own but
it has received /far/ more time/attention.

But, that's just me :)

Has anyone ever wondered just why these programs have become so *BLOATED*? I
mean you're looking at a 4.7 Mb download for X-Setup alone without installing
it. Is this really nessary for a *CONFIG* utillity?

John ....

As someone who has been programming since 1966,
I think you have greatly under-estimated
the amount specialized knowledge and work required
to design, implement, test, distribute, and maintain software ....

I think EVERYTHING is grossly overpriced,
not just software ....

Yes. Me.

I bet you could go into X-Setup's folder and delete a bunch of unnecessary
stuff. I bet hardly anyone uses the "Wizards", and they would be a good
start.

Few people realize what actually goes into programming. Authors have skill,
there's no doubt. Software developers have skill and an ability to endure
suffering beyond belief. You don't see authors with scars from the keyboard
on their foreheads. :)

Ever tried writing a really good novel? I have, and I gave up. On the
other hand, I used to program back in the late 70s (got bored with it
though.) There is no comparison.

Good point, Bob. That program has modules for almost all version of
the Windows OS. If you delete them and only keep the ones that apply
to your system, then that'll shrink it a bunch.
