wurd & excel problem

When I attempt to open files in Word or Excel , Word reports file [filename]
is not available", Excel reports that "your virus scanner has detected a
problem with [filename].

It appears that possibly the "Normal.Dot" file is being overtaken. I can
create a new Word or Excel file and save it , yet I can not open it.
This symptom has appeared since running Symantec's, Korgo removal tool.

Any leads would be much appreciated,
