Hi Brad,

This is not a Windows file. Based upon the information I can find, it is
most likely spyware on your system.

Most likely the CoolWebSearch hijacker variant MSUpdater.exe.

Now check your system for other "hijackware":

Dealing with Hijackware

http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

You must seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred
tool to use these days. It will help to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,
not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

It is spyware and shows as an adware virus upon scanning
with Norton. The question is how to delete the file. It
comes up as access denied as it is write-protected. When
I checked in Knowledge base it is known to be an issue
with Microsoft products, XP and XP Pro.

My question is how to get rid of the thing?! It's on my
teenager's notebook and I think he must have picked it up
at kazaa or at some X-rated site. Anyone know?

Hi!
"wupdater.exe" is a "backdoor" virus. It can be removed using the
techniques described in the
article:-http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/enterprise/security_info/ve_detail.php?Vname=BKDR_SDBOT.BE.
It may also be detected and removed by the spyware/malware tools also.
