wupdater.exe error message

I am running Win XP home edition. I keep my updates
current. For the past several weeks I have been getting an
error message when I go to shutdown that says:
End Program wupdater.exe
then...
wupdater.exe not responding

Any ideas how to correct this problem with wupdater.exe?

Most likely adware or Trojan.

Go to Lavasoft http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ and download and execute Ad-Aware.
