WUGNET Speed test

O

Old Enough

My OS is Windows XP SP3.
I'm using Firefox 3.0.3, and have the Java add-ons and plug-ins.
Under "tools-options-content" I have Java and Java script enabled.

For years, I have been using WUGNET speed test to test downolad speed
(http://www.wugnet.com/myspeed/speedtest.asp)

I must have done something to disable the function of this site, but
can't figure out what.

When I go to the above site, Nothing happens, and the message reads
"Can't see the image below? More than likely you don't have Java
installed, or enabled on your computer"

I uninstalled and reinstalled Java.
Now, http://java.com/en/download/faq/5000070900.xml tells me:
"Congratulations. Java is installed on your system.
Your Java configuration is:
Java vendor Sun Microsystems Inc
JRE version 1.4.2_02
Operating System Windows XP
OS Version 5.1

Any help and/or suggestions?

Thanks!

First of all, where did you get that really old version of Java?
Besides being more than a little out-dated now, that specific version
has known security vulnerabilities. The current version is 1.6.0_10.
You really should remove the older version and get the most recent
version directly from Sun MicroSystems at:

http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_xpi.jsp?locale=en&host=www.java.com:80
(One word of caution, though: This download will also offer to install
a bit of unnecessary bloat-ware, a "Yahoo Toolbar." Be sure to
de-select the option, if you don't want this product.)

Also, because the Java developers have specifically designed their
update installation routines to leave older Java releases in place (This
way they don't have to take the trouble to make the newer versions
backwards-compatible), you may have multiple versions of Java installed,
one of which may be corrupted and is interfering with the operation of
the others, it would be a good idea to ensure that you've removed all
but the very latest Java JRE version.

Additionally, here are some other URLs that you can use to test your
connection speeds:

ADSLguide Broadband Speed Test

I'll take some time going through your recommendations.

Incidentally, here's one to add to your quotes from famous people in
your sig line:

Enough. You've brought this up at every opportunity. Although I fully expect
you not to reply, as I have never seen you post back any of the many times
you've been challenged on technical matters: as a regular contributor to
this group, please would you explain your averseness to "third-party
software"? Is your position that an XP computer should only have Microsoft
software installed?

Bruce, I installed latest java from your linked website before reading all
of your article. I now have in A/R/, java 6 updates 2, 3, and ten, and Java
SE Runtime environment 6. Should I delete (remove) any of these,or all, and
re-download current Java? TIA,

You should be OK if you just remove the "Java 6 updates 2 and 3." I'm
not sure just what the Java SE Runtime environment 6" is, unless it's
also another, earlier version. Without knowing if some other
application on your computer needs it, I'd try leaving it in place, for now.
