"Wubi-Linux" tutorials please, Linux advice please

R

Hi all;
I am part of the MS Windows XP diaspora, i see the end coming and
am looking for alternative Operating Systems. At present I run MS
Windows XP and sure like it but I am feeling it will not be a secure
OS in a few months. I tried to download the Linux "application-OS"
named Wubi. FYI, it purports to be the entire Ubuntu OS confiigured
as an application and it supports MS Windows XP, purportedly. So why
the caveats and purportedlies?
When I downloaded Wubi, first it took FOREVER, about nine hours
to download, although, thank God, it was not a heavy application and I
could use another tab to surf the web at the same time.
Second, I never got it to work. When i rebooted, yes, I got the
opportunity to go into Ubunbtu, but there was some message (sorry,
fool-me, I did NOT jot it down) about RAD drivers being missing.
Conclusion: can someone show me a tutorial to get Wubi up and
running, so i can see whether Ubuntu is for me. You know, I want to
see if it is comfortable for me.
ALSO: important: if someone can show me a form of Linux which
"feels" like Windows a little, so i am not too stressed to use it, i
would like a little advice-education.
Do you understand? I want a tutorial for Wubi and advice on the
most Windows-like Linux.
Thank you for patiently bearing with me and Very Best!
Robb

Dear Malke;
Thank you for the information. Here is why I even asked here:
Wubi is confiigured not as Linux but as a MS Windows application/
file. So! I asked here where MS Windows problems obtain. However, I
thank you and will go to them, and who knows, they may say: We need
you to ask MS since Wubi supports MS!
Very Best Malke!

Dear Robb:

If you are looking for alternate operating systems you will not want to run
Linux in Windows! Be brave! Walk on the Wild Side! Install Linux like a
grownup!

Or burn an Ubuntu Live CD or Knoppix Live CD and experiment with it. Then
ask questions about Linux in a Linux forum.

Personally, I'm a long-time SUSE user and I believe there's an openSUSE Live
CD, too.

EOT for me.

Thanks Malke!
I really appreciate your input. However, you see, i need to keep
a system running which i am familiar with, and for now its MS Win XP.
What I really need is a chance to spend an hour each day playing with
Linux and making a scad of errors, crashing and so on. I did that
with XP, paid for techies to help and repair, and then got the swing
of things--and I need the same with Linux.
I believe that a system like Wubi or a download of some Linux
dist. on a virtual machine would get me set. Then in the long run,
dual boot like the Swiss have done, and further on--on and on into
pure Linux. But I need an easy start.
Right now I have downloaded a virtual machine and just need the chance
to read into its rules and then download Linux.
But I remain interested also in Wubi--both Wubi and thew virtual
machine will offer me the chance to mess about freely.
Best, Very Best!

Malke is correct. Get a "live" CD (they are free) and you can run the OS from
the CD without actually installing it.

Woohoo my first post...

Ahem, well I believe that the new version of Fedora (Sulphur) supports
"persistent" files, which basically pairs your livecd w/ data on a thumb
drive, so you can keep your files from session to session... Check it out...

You're responding to a very old thread which has been closed since late
April. Since this is your first post (and to cap it off you're using the
dreadful web interface), these links will help you with your *second* post.

Since you are using the web interface, you may not realize that this is
really a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you learn
to use a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows, but you
can use Outlook Express (XP) or Windows Mail (Vista) since you already have
it. Here are some links to information about newsgroups:
