WTD: Defrag replacement for XP

D

Dick_Hazeleger

For a friend abroad, without access to Usenet, the following request:

Is there a freeware replacement for the Windows XP-SP2 defragger?

Google Groups hasn't been very cooperative, and the only real defragger
I can find myself is Diskeeper Lite 7.014 (but I cannot find any clue
whether this program would run stable on this OS)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Irek,

Thanks alot! This could be something for me (W2K) as well <grin>.
Downloaded (also the contig program) and testing it...

For those interested:

Now... why didn't Google tell me about this? :-( Too busy with

DIRMS & BUZZSAW
Freeware Defragmentation Programs for Windows NT4, NT2000 and XP . Both
programs support the FAT, FAT32, and NTFS file systems.

Defragment HD with several passages of DIRMS and then put BUZZSAW in
the Startup, which defragments HD continuosly, on the fly!!
DIRMS defragments ALL files.
BUZZSAW defragments only files been modified after DIRMS..

I use the version that only defagments when the disk is idle.
I use it this way, dirms is installed in Unzipped on D partition.
Substitute D for your drive letter & Unzipped for the folder where you
installed dirms.
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt ( type in > D: &
hit Enter )
Copy the 1st line below & paste into the Command Prompt window & press
Enter.
Wait for defrag to finish & repeat for the next drive letter.
When all drive letters are done, type > exit & press Enter.

Now open the folder in Explorer where you installed Dirms & right click
on Buzzsaw.exe & click on Create Shortcut. Now drag that shortcut to
your Startup folder in Windows Explorer.

Example, because I have my operating system on it's own partition, it
is here.
Windows Explorer > Local Disk (D:) > Documents and Settings > John >
Start Menu > Programs > Startup.

Now, after a reboot, Buzzsaw will appear ( after about 60 seconds ) on
the bar, where the time is displayed.
From now on, defraging will occur automatically.

Example, single drive & patition.
Using dirms zip ( not dirms1220 )
C:\unzipped\dirms\dirms c -q

Example, this is a computer using multi partitions & drives.
D:\unzipped\dirms\dirms c -q
D:\unzipped\dirms\dirms d -q
D:\unzipped\dirms\dirms e -q
D:\unzipped\dirms\dirms f -q
D:\unzipped\dirms\dirms h -q
D:\unzipped\dirms\dirms i -q
D:\unzipped\dirms\dirms j -q
D:\unzipped\dirms\dirms k -q
D:\unzipped\dirms\dirms l -q
D:\unzipped\dirms\dirms m -q

While it was true that defragmenting helped older PCs, it no longer
applies. Today we have 7200-RPM (rotations per minute) hard-disk drives
with improved seek and latency times; many also contain an 8-MB cache
buffer. Let's not forget Windows XP's ultra-efficient NTFS (NT File
System). For PCs, servers, and workstations equipped with these
innovations, defragmenting no longer makes much improvement, if any, to
system performance.

Enable or disable boot defrag
http://www.rdisruption.com/docs/xp%...ce tweaks.htm
A great new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot
defragment. This places all boot files next to each other on the disk
to allow for faster booting. By default this option in enables but on
some builds it is not so below is how to turn it on.

Start Regedit. If you are unfamiliar with regedit please refer to our
FAQ on how to get started.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftDfrgBootOptimiz
eFunction
Select Enable from the list on the right.
Right on it and select Modify.
Change the value to Y to enable and N to disable.
Reboot your computer.

Defrag "Tricks"

Hi Fred, Here's a bunch of tricks I'd like to share with your readers.
It's all about one thing: hard disk defragmentation.
If you ask the Win2K/XP's defragmenter run on a hard disk, it can't
defrag things such as registry files in use, or the virtual memory file
(pagefile.sys). So here's the first trick
use Sysinternals' free PageDefrag available at
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/pagedefrag.shtml
that does the job, with one cool option it can automatically do it at
every boot. I choose this, with no problem at all.

After Win2K/XP' defragmenter runs (on GUI mode), if you click on the
"display report" button, many times you can see that for some reasons
(mostly available space I think) some nonsystem files stay - sometimes
very - fragmented. Trick #2 here you can use Sysinternals' free Contig
(
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/contig.shtml ).

It's a command-line tool that instantly defrags any file you want
(except the aforementioned).

But if the fragmented files are many, the task can be daunting. That's
where trick #3 comes: choose to save the report file, and use the
attached file (configReport.cmd). It takes the report file as argument,
parses it and does a "contig" on every file it finds referenced. Feel
free to improve it as you like.

Now, for a quick, everyday way of working, here's the 4th trick: when
you choose to save the report from Win2K/XP's defragmenter, choose a
filename with an unused extension (for instance VolumeG.txt.dfl or
VolumeG.txt.defragreportfile).
Then double-click this file, choose "Select the program in a list",
then "Browse...", select contigReport.cmd, click OK.
From now on, whenever you double-click any file like
VolumeG.txt.defragreportfile (or whatever extension you chose), an
automatic defrag will be done on them. ) Enjoy, MLL

http://www.excessive-software.tk/
Power Defragmenter is based on Sysinternals defragmentation "engine".
Basically its just a very advanced GUI for the Sysinternals core
application which takes defragmentation process to a whole new level.
Very high defragmentation speed, efficiency and ease of use.
Such high speed is only available with Sysinternals defragmentation
"engine".
Thanks again to Sysinternals Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell.

Version 1.8 and later features new PowerMode which provides even higher
defragmentation rate.
Power Defragmenter is a stand-alone application (extract&use) which
works only in Windows 2000/XP

JMatt,

Now, being "in the trade" for quite some time, *I* wouldn't advise someone
to turn off their page file in order to perform a complete defrag in Safe
Mode. Perhaps you could do that (although still not my first advise to
give) on a Windows 95 system, but on NT/2K/XP I most definitely wouldn't
try that!

Hi Conor,

I know it is nagware, but what I really would like to know is whether it
will run stable on an XP-system (especially on XP's NTFS)? After all it
is some 11 MB to download, and while I am on DSL, my friend abroad is on
DUN... don't want to let them download something that large, only to
find out that it either won't run, or would make the system unstable...

Do you have experiences with it on XP (with Sp2)?

Looking forward to your reply

Thanks, and kindest regards,

Absolutely rock solid. I install it as default on all computers. I even
went so far as to buy Diskeeper 9 based on my experience with 7 Lite.

You can prevent the IE nagware window popping up but I forget how I
managed it.
