Wrong driver appears

I just upgraded from ME to XP and am trying to get things back together. I
have a Canon printer which installed with no action on my part. The older
Panasonic KX-P2123 24-pin dot matrix however won't go in. This printer did
function correctly under ME. The printer appears in the Panasonic list of
drivers but upon clicking it there is a long delay and then another
(Panasonic) printer is selected. This unwanted printer does install but, of
course, it doesn't drive the printer I actually have. The printer has EPSON
and IBM emulation modes also so I tried installing an EPSON driver. The same
thing happens, except that the unwanted driver is an EPSON driver.

Any insights?

The Panasonic printer must be connected by parallel cable. If you
have it connected with a USB cable it will not install.
