writing data to a cd

I have several concerns here. First, when I use XP's own
internal tool to try to write data to a cd, I get an
error message that the CD is no longer usable. The only
suggestion from Windows is to try a different brand. I
though a CD was a CD and that brand did not matter. The
brand I am trying to use is Verbatim.

Furthermore, when trying to use a different software to
burn the CD, Windows own software seems to override it.

Any idease anyone?

When using a third-party CD Recording program, it is
best to disable XP's built-in CD Recording program.
To do so:

Open MY COMPUTER and right-click on your CD-RW drive and select
PROPERTIES > RECORDING and uncheck the box next to "Enable
CD Recording on this drive", then click APPLY.
